32 Florian Presents A Puzzle

MELBOURNE, 19 SEPTEMBER 1981

Our reception at Sydney Airport in Australia wasn’t at all pleasant. The passengers and the crew had to wait for what seemed like an age after the plane landed, not knowing what was going on. While we were sitting in the narrow seats, filling out the disembarkation forms and getting annoyed about the many personal questions they demanded of us, several officials from the local health authority appeared in the passenger compartment armed with large aerosols and started to shroud everything in spray, including the luggage in the open compartments. It was outrageous! After a long, tiring flight we all wanted to get out of the plane, and now, to top it all, we were being covered in powder! The human disinfectant they were using made us gasp and wheeze, while those with the sprays wore white masks and gloves so that they didn’t have to breathe in the poison themselves. We felt like lepers. The image of the disinfecting process in German concentration camps sprang to mind. They would probably have liked to have put us into quarantine for a few days as well. I don’t know what the Australians were afraid of.
